Going the Next Step - A Clever Product Opportunity?
I admit to being bemused by the recent Dentyne Ice gum commercial, seemingly taking a page from the book of condom advertising. The "Practice Safe Breath" punchline is preceded by a series of visual scenarios that highly suggest that the product being purveyed is condoms. It was clever, and elicited a chuckle from this viewer.
But why leave it there? Personally, I'm thinking Dentyne Ice should be talking to the Trojan man and looking to issue a combo pack. Because we live in a time where "solutions" are warranted, and this seems a rather likely pairing.
What other pairings might be solution marketing home runs? Some are really obvious - like pens and paper sold together, or - dare I say it - the combo packs that are "cracker and cheese". Why aren't razor blades and shaving foam packaged together? Why aren't computer printers sold with a lifetime option on ink? (Probably because of how variable the ink consumption is, but still?) There must be many opportunities.
I now await the next great condom commercial, by the way - I'm thinking they might do something with old Chiclets imagery, or maybe they can borrow from the Dristan Easter Island commercials?
