E-Learning Games Must Augment, Not Dominate, Online Learning
Oct 7, 2014
Lately, I've felt that organizations have gone koo-koo for online games as part of learning activities. Sure, the endless clicking of the Next and Previous buttons does not serve online learners well; but games as a potential solution must be carefully crafted. This article addresses some useful guiding principles. Now, will someone please tell me how we go about getting games into e-learning that support SCORM or xAPI? (That one has been puzzling me.)

Big Data and Better Learning - On the Horizon
Oct 7, 2014
I have participated in several personal development sessions, with learning experts like Andy Peterson (Digital Vistas) and Mark Hellinger (of Xyleme), who have talked about leveraging big data to personalize learning experiences. I've even had some good fortune of working towards learning personalization, although the efforts rest on the individual learners to stipulate both their interests, knowledge gaps and importantly, their levels of motivation. So now we learn that number-crunching is going to happen by a large coalition of academic institutions. Will it be helpful, or will it just create analysis paralysis? I'm still a believer that you let the learner take the lead.

Customer Experience Beating Advertising as Business Driver
Oct 2, 2014
Old habits die hard. The emergence of focus on customer experience as part of the marketing continuum and modern marketing toolset is important. Turns out that something really obvious is in play, as explained in this article from COLLOQUY: "An advertisement... can reach a large number of people, but how much time does the brand spend with them? A few seconds, perhaps, and the consumer may not even be paying attention. With experiences, however, those seconds expand into minutes or even hours, and tend to capture a greater amount of attention and focus." Couldn't have said it better!
